"I paint for colour more than form — bring your imagination!"
David Sherwin was born in London in the early sixties — deep red hair, hard to hide. A childhood that took him from St John's Wood to California shaped a lifelong fascination with craft, colour, and the unexpected.
His career began in the print trade: lithography and colour separations, working through Los Angeles and London's finest trade houses during the eighties and nineties. Everything was built around colour — scanning, proofing, four-colour process, final film. "It wasn't till later I realised the influence my experience in colour separations has had on my painting today."
In 1991, under Greek influence on the island of Crete, he was given a brush, paint, and paper. Twenty-four small watercolour paintings appeared from a single brush. His friends called them magic. The Magic Series was born.
Self-taught and proudly so. He has never made the claim of art school. "I like to think of myself as a Freestyle Creative with no particular curriculum." Back in London now, the collection continues to grow — organic, ever-changing, and alive.
My artwork is a form of self-expression. It is reflected in where I am, and what materials I have at hand. As a creative person I am not limited to a single medium: found objects, reclaimed materials, along with the idea of using no power tools — these are some of the thoughts I keep in mind when making art.
Keeping the work handmade is important to me. With painting I am most comfortable working with water-based paint. I often mix my own colours. Although my painting is mainly abstract, my sense of colour is usually what — say my viewers — captivates them.
Some of my painting is quite small; perhaps I'm a miniaturist! I paint for colour more than form. Bring your imagination!

Born in London with deep red hair — "hard to hide in school." After a year at St John's Wood secondary school, the family emigrated to California.
Found his way to the school print shop — mechanical platen presses, offset presses, silk screen. A love affair with print and craft began.
Left John H. Francis Polytechnic and joined a large print company. A three-year apprenticeship in lithography and colour separations followed — four-colour process, scanning, proofing, final film. Journeyman status earned at the finest trade houses in Los Angeles and London.
"The light and the colours of Santorini blew my mind arriving the first time on the Ferry from Athens." Under Greek influence, with a brush placed in his hand, twenty-four small watercolour paintings appeared from a single brush. His friends called them magic. The Magic Series was born.
"I have been back in London now for some years and continue to grow my art collection as it unfolds around me. I work from inside out. An Original Organic Artist." Water is his medium. The collection is forever growing.
Your work is poetic, delicate and raw, pure and emotional. I hate using words to describe art because it is really more of an energy, a feeling that can't be put into words. Your use of colour is amazing, so beautiful to me.
